Credential Issues Committee Meeting Notes

Credential Issues Committee Meeting
Commission on Teacher Credentialing
January 10, 2001 - Sacramento

In its continuing work on the review of the Designated Subjects Vocational Education credential as an action item, members of the CAROCP Credentials Committee met with Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) staff in Sacramento on Wednesday, January 10, 2001. CTC has responded positively to the CAROCP request for review of the Designated Subjects Vocational Education credential. The plan is for a Task Force to be convened in March with a goal of completing its work in December 2001 in time to move recommendations for changes forward to the Commission for approval.

The Credentials Committee work on January 10 was focused on preparing the charge for the Task Force. Seven committee members and two CDE representatives met with Helen Hawley, Consultant, and Pat Mette, DS Credential Team. In addition to the charge, we also discussed a possible vision statement for the work of the Task Force to include a new level of acceptance and improved perception of the value of the credential. The initial recognition of change will be in a possible new name of the credential, the Career-Technical Education credential. A look at the 16 DOE industry clusters was also recommended as a place to start the review of the current subjects list. Another recommendation was to look at a number of ways in which one can qualify for the credential (e.g.industry certification, education, testing,etc.).

CTC will be issuing a call for volunteers to be recommended by LEAs and to submit vitae for consideration as a task force member. Those who are interested need to be in contact with their local CTC LEA. That information should go out from CTC next week.

Submitted by Marcia Bush, Chair

They will also look at different ways to meet the experience requirement; e.g., education, certification, testing, etc. Apparently B-CLAD has 10 or 12 options to help candidates meet requirements

Well done. Thank you so much, Marcia. I will get the task force invitation out next week.

Helen Hawley

Marcia: I thought the meeting at the commission went very well. I believe we focused in on the most important issues and have established a task list that not only represents the interests of ROP's but also will address major areas of concern to the school districts (whether they know it or not). Thanks again for doing all the work to get us to this point. I really think we are on the right track and at the same time realize there is a great deal more to do. Paul
